What is a chain link fence good for in Riverside?

Chain link is the plain, practical choice. It is woven steel wire stretched between posts and a top rail. It lets you see through, it costs less per foot than most other types, and it goes up fast on flat or sloped ground. In Riverside it shows up around large lots, dog runs, pool equipment areas, schools, and small commercial yards.

It is not a privacy fence on its own, but it can become one. Slats woven through the mesh, or a screen fabric on the inside, can block sightlines. That changes how it handles wind, so ask about it.

If looks matter more than price, compare it with aluminum and iron fences or wood. For a simple, functional line, chain link is hard to beat on value.

Which chain link types and heights are available?

The main choices are the coating, the wire thickness and the height.

  • Galvanized. A zinc coat that resists rust. A plain silver look that suits most utility uses.
  • Vinyl-coated. Black, green or brown plastic over the wire. It looks softer and blends in better with landscaping and hillsides.
  • Gauge. Heavier wire is stiffer and harder to cut or bend. It costs more.
  • Height. Four feet is common for dog runs and front boundaries, six feet for most back yards, and taller for secured areas.

Posts and top rail should match the mesh, and heavier fences need stronger line posts and bracing at the ends and corners. Barbed wire on top is limited or banned in many residential zones, so check city rules before adding it.

Security fencing may also mean locking gates, tension wire at the base and added height. Describe what you need to protect and we can plan it.

How does chain link fit Riverside's lots, brush and horse properties?

Riverside and nearby Norco and Jurupa Valley have a lot of mixed property. There are tract lots with narrow side yards, hillside lots with brush, and larger parcels where animals live. Chain link suits each in a different way.

  • Dry brush areas. Metal does not burn, and open mesh does not trap debris the way a solid fence does.
  • Dogs and small animals. Smaller mesh and a bottom rail or tension wire help keep pets in.
  • Larger lots. Long runs are quick to build and easy to fix.
  • Slopes. The mesh can follow the ground, or be stepped, with less trouble than rigid panels.

For horses, a chain link fence is not usually the first choice, since animals can catch a hoof or lean on the mesh. Ask a livestock fence specialist about the right design for animals.

Chain link is usually the lowest cost per foot, but several things can still change the number.

  • Length of the run and number of corners.
  • Height and wire gauge.
  • Galvanized or vinyl-coated, and the color.
  • Privacy slats or screen fabric.
  • Number and width of gates, and any lock or latch type.
  • Rocky ground or hard clay that slows digging.
  • Tear-out and haul-away of an old fence.
  • Permit or HOA steps, if the property needs them.

Ask for the quote to show the gauge, coating, height and post size. That way you can tell when one price is lower because the fence is lighter, not because the work is smarter. If your yard has an older fence that is only partly worn, a repair visit may cost less than starting over.

How long does it take, and when should you call?

Chain link often goes up faster than other fence types, since the posts are set and the mesh is stretched over the frame in one pass. Concrete still needs time to cure before the mesh is pulled tight, so we do not promise a fixed schedule. Weather, access and length all play a part.

On the day

  • Clear brush, trash and stored items from the fence line.
  • Mark the property corners if you know where they are.
  • Keep dogs and children away from the work area.
  • Check the gate width for mowers, trailers or vehicles.

When to call

Call if you have a new pool or dog, if you need to secure a yard, if your old fence is rusted or sagging, or if a shared line needs replacing. The Riverside Fencing home page lists our other services.

Questions about fencing in Riverside

Is a chain link fence allowed in my Riverside neighborhood?

On many lots, yes, but some HOAs do not allow it in front or visible areas, and cities may limit height and top wire. Look at your HOA rules and the city code for your address. If an association wants it hidden, a vinyl-coated black or green mesh can help.

Can chain link be made private?

Yes. Slats woven through the mesh or a screen fabric on the inside can block most views. Both catch more wind than open mesh, so the posts and ties need to be sized for it. We can explain the options and the trade-offs on the visit.

Will a chain link fence rust?

Galvanized wire resists rust for a long time, and vinyl-coated wire adds another layer. Rust shows first at cut ends, welds and gate hardware. Keeping sprinklers off the fence helps. Rust that has spread through the mesh usually means it is time to replace that section.

What is the right height for a dog run?

It depends on the dog. Four feet may hold a small dog, while jumpers and large dogs often need six feet. A bottom rail or tension wire stops diggers and squeezers. Describe your dog and your yard and we can suggest a height.

Can you install security fencing with locking gates?

We can plan a taller chain link line with locking gates and bracing for a secured area. Tell us what the fence has to protect and when you need access. Rules on height, barbed wire and sight lines differ by zone, so check with the city before you finalize the design.
