Fence repair and gates

Fence repair in Riverside, CA

Fix leaning posts, wind damage and sagging gates, or add an automatic gate opener. We tell you what is worth repairing.

  • Posts, rails, panels and gates
  • Repair or replace advice
  • Gate openers and keypads

What does fence repair in Riverside include?

Most repair calls are small jobs that grow if you wait. A leaning post becomes a leaning section. A loose picket becomes five. We handle the common ones for wood, vinyl, chain link and metal fences.

  • Replacing broken or rotted posts and rails.
  • Re-setting a leaning post in new concrete.
  • Swapping cracked pickets, boards and panels.
  • Straightening or re-stretching sagging chain link.
  • Fixing gates that drag, sag or will not latch.
  • Replacing hinges, latches and drop rods.

On a visit, we look at the whole line. If three posts are failing, it is often better to know that now than to patch the first one and meet the others next month. Work on a fence you own that is shared with a neighbor can sometimes be split. See below for a short note on that.

Should you repair or replace the fence?

Repair makes sense when the damage is local and the rest is sound. Replace when the damage is spread throughout the fence. Here are some signs to watch for.

Repair is often enough when

  • Only a few posts or sections are damaged, for instance after a wind event.
  • The wood is still firm when you push a screwdriver into it.
  • The fence is mostly straight and the line is sound.
  • Gate trouble is hardware or alignment, not rot.

Replacing is often wiser when

  • Many posts rock in the ground, or the bases are soft or termite-damaged.
  • Rust has gone through chain link or iron in many places.
  • A repair would cost close to a new fence.

If you land in the second group, see our pages on wood fences and aluminum and iron. We will give you the repair price and the replace price, in writing, so you can choose.

What is gate automation, and what does it need?

Gate automation means an electric opener that swings or slides your gate open at the push of a remote, keypad or phone app. People add it to driveway gates for convenience and security. It is a larger job than a hinge swap, and it works best when the gate itself is straight and strong.

  • Swing or slide. Swing openers push or pull a hinged gate. Slide openers roll the gate along a track and suit tight driveways.
  • Power. Line voltage from the house, or a solar panel and battery kit. Line voltage may need an electrician and a permit.
  • Safety. Sensors and a reverse feature stop the gate if something is in the way.
  • Controls. Remotes, keypads, and phone access.

A sagging or heavy gate wears out openers fast, so we check and fix the gate first. An HOA may need to approve a keypad or a post.

Repair prices vary more than new fence prices, because every fix is different. These are the points that move the number.

  • How many posts, panels or gate parts are involved.
  • The fence material and whether matching pieces are still available.
  • Access to the damaged area, and slope.
  • Concrete work, since a post often has to be dug out and re-set.
  • Haul-away of broken pieces.
  • For automation, the opener type, power source, safety sensors, controls and any electrical work.
  • Permit or HOA steps.

Match is also a question. Old wood fades and old vinyl yellows, so new pieces can look different. Ask about stain, color and options before the work starts. Our home page explains how a quote works.

How long does repair take, and when should you call?

Small repairs can be done in a visit, and larger posts or gate work can take longer. Concrete needs time to cure, and automation may take extra visits for wiring and testing, so we do not promise a fixed schedule.

Call soon if

  • Posts lean after a wind event.
  • A gate no longer latches, which can leave a pool or pets exposed.
  • A damaged section is next to a street or alley.
  • A neighbor's fence is failing and affects your yard.

On shared fences, California's Good Neighbor Fence Act, in general terms, expects adjoining owners to share the cost of reasonable repairs and to give notice first. It is a legal topic, so ask a lawyer or the city about your case. Our crew can document the damage with photos and a written quote to help you start that talk.

Questions about fencing in Riverside

Can you repair a fence after a Santa Ana wind storm?

Yes. Wind damage is one of the most common calls. It usually means leaning or snapped posts, loose rails and pickets on the ground. We look at the whole line, then quote the repair and, if needed, a replacement for the weakest sections. Take photos before you move anything, in case you file a claim.

Why does my gate drag or not latch?

Usually the post has shifted or the gate has sagged. Heat and clay soil can move posts over time, and heavy gates pull on hinges. A fix can be as simple as new hardware or as large as re-setting a post. We check the post first, since hardware on a leaning post will not hold.

Can you add an automatic opener to my existing gate?

Often yes, if the gate is straight, strong and swings or slides freely. We check the gate, the posts, the power options and the driveway layout. Older or heavy gates may need repair or a rebuild first. Your HOA may also need to approve controls or posts.

Does insurance cover fence damage from wind?

Some homeowners policies cover fence damage from wind, often with limits and a deductible, and many do not cover wear and tear. We cannot say what your policy covers. Call your insurer, take clear photos, and ask us for a written repair quote to attach to a claim.

Who pays to repair a shared fence?

California's Good Neighbor Fence Act, in general terms, treats adjoining owners as sharing the cost of reasonable repair of a boundary fence, with advance notice. The details depend on your case and on who caused the damage. Talk with your neighbor first and ask a lawyer if you cannot agree.
